After completing a BSc in Sociology at the University of Bristol in 1995, I moved to University College London where I studied part-time for a MSc in Sociology, Health and Healthcare (1998). I then spent four years completing my PhD in medical sociology under the supervision of Professor Paul Higgs.
I started my research career as a research officer in the charity sector in 1997, exploring the social care needs of young adults with juvenile onset Batten disease and their families. This was followed by a research fellowship at St George’s University of London in 2000, followed by my first lectureship in Medical Sociology at Roehampton University in 2002. In 2004 I obtained my PhD from UCL and joined King’s College London as Lecturer in Sociology. I was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2014.
I am on the Editorial Team for the journal Sociology of Health and Illness, co-editor of the journal Social Science and Dentistry, and a contributing editor on the BSA supported Cost of Living blogsite. I have just completed my term on the BSA Medical Sociology Group Committee.
